Playa del Duque, Tenerife

Tenerife, the largest of the seven Canary Islands, attracts around five million tourists each year. On a latitude with the Sahara Desert, the island known internationally as the ‘Island of Eternal Spring’ (Isla de la Eterna Primavera) enjoys a year-round warm climate.

Despite the range of nationalities, with their equally varied visual motifs of style and taste that appear here, a distinctive quality unites them. In an environment where clothing is minimised and more of the human body is on display, these people all share a certain ‘body awareness’ which exudes from their presentation to the camera.

Each photograph forces an affiliation between subject and viewer. As observers, we perhaps prompt their desire to appear ‘body confident’, as we balance our joy of looking with a respectful awareness of voyeurism towards each semi-clad figure.
